InsureCal Insurance Agency, based in Turlock, California, was founded in 2015 by Colbie McRae. With a successful background as a strong sales producer by the age of 24, Colbie saw a unique opportunity to leverage the message of being ‘locally owned and operated.’ This vision led him to establish InsureCal, which quickly grew through word-of-mouth and networking.
Initially, InsureCal expanded to a five-person team dedicated to providing quality insurance products for both individuals and businesses. However, Colbie recognized a need to better focus the company’s efforts to capitalize on market conditions and strengthen existing relationships. He noticed a significant opportunity within the evolving agricultural industry, which was transitioning from traditional farming to more complex business enterprises with greater insurance needs.
“My family is in the Ag industry, and I know that larger enterprises have greater insurance risks, making it even more important that they have proper coverage,” Colbie explained. He sought assistance from the Valley Sierra Small Business Development Center (SBDC) to develop a strategic marketing plan targeting this underserved market segment.
With the guidance of lead SBDC consultant Claudia Newcorn, Colbie crafted a detailed multi-year business strategy and a two-year marketing plan. This plan emphasized business goals and included both digital and traditional marketing outreach efforts, along with effective communication strategies.
“Claudia’s work was critical in enabling me to develop a strong, focused positioning and message that specifically targets the Ag industry,” Colbie said.
Feeling more confident about showcasing InsureCal’s competitive edge, Colbie expressed his appreciation for the SBDC’s support. “I highly recommend the SBDC to any company as a very helpful resource,” he stated. Through this collaboration, InsureCal is now poised to effectively market to the agricultural industry and enhance its market presence.
