Yeshiva Davis wanted to grow her Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) practice K&S Therapeutic Services. In a time when many online therapy platforms try to turn this highly skilled profession into gig work, some therapists worry that the competition may depress wages and put pressure on their independent relationships with clients. Yeshiva felt she could find a way to serve the needs of both clients and therapists if she could also gain support to scale her business.
Once she connected with the Pacific Coast Regional Small Business Development Center (SBDC), Yeshiva took advantage of the wealth of resources available, including one-on-one advising, workshops, and access to capital such as winning an Economic Recovery Grant with SBDC assistance. That first win started Yeshiva on a path where she was able to apply for and get two other grants to support her growth and vision.
“I would not have known about the grant or been ready to apply and qualify for it without the SBDC,” said Yeshiva.
Ms. Davis also discovered that SBDC services don’t have a time limit and are there for you throughout your business journey. For example, as the practice continued to grow, SBDC advisor Frank Stokes recommended that she get a line of credit. With his help, Yeshiva’s application to Cathay Bank was approved. And she learned that her business might be a good fit for government contracting opportunities, so she got K&S certified as a Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) through the Southern California Minority Supplier Development Council.
“Entrepreneurship is lonely,” she said. “It’s knowing that I have someone to call if I’m questioning something, feeling anxious, or need a sounding board,” she shared about the support she receives from PCR SBDC Director Colette Moore and her team.
Ms. Davis has found success by augmenting her business with contract supervision and employment of early-career therapists. Through this process, Yeshiva discovered that she actually likes to train and teach. She says, “My biggest achievement is happy therapists.”
