Founded by Dr. Daniel Howard and Andrew DeMille, Quantum Energy, Inc. is developing a groundbreaking predictive analytics software platform that quantifies the public health, ecosystem, and economic benefits of clean energy projects. Their mission is to bring comprehensive impact analytics to all energy decisions, providing critical insights that have traditionally been inaccessible or prohibitively expensive to obtain.
The problem Quantum Energy addresses is significant: approximately 87% of renewable energy projects in the United States are severely delayed or fail due to community and other forms of opposition, costing developers $200,000 per megawatt on average, or about one-fifth of their build costs. While energy developers know the cost and carbon emissions reductions of their projects, they lack quantitative insights into the majority of impacts, including avoided pollution, public health benefits, ecosystem improvements, environmental equity, and broader economic impacts. Without this comprehensive data, they struggle to overcome opposition and demonstrate the full merits of their projects.
Dr. Howard’s expertise in energy systems modeling and environmental impact assessment was developed through research fellowships with the National Science Foundation, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and U.S. Agency for International Development. He pioneered an approach that integrates energy system optimization with life cycle assessments. This integration allows for comprehensive quantification of both global and local impacts of energy decisions in an automated, scalable manner that was previously impossible.
The company’s flagship product, the TotalView Energy Platform, combines machine learning with big data and industry-leading life cycle impact assessment methodologies. The platform programmatically ingests millions of data points to simulate the electricity grid on an hourly basis, producing a comprehensive picture of clean energy project impacts in an accurate and automated fashion. What once required teams of researchers, millions of dollars, and years of analysis is now becoming available through automated software.
Despite their technological breakthrough and early customer traction, including $178,000 in revenue from leading clean energy developers and corporate energy buyers, Quantum Energy faced the challenge of completing their minimum viable product (MVP) and scaling their operations. They had secured $255,000 from NSF SBIR Phase I funding and raised $510,000 in angel and pre-seed venture capital, but needed additional support to accelerate their development timeline and strengthen their position for larger investment rounds.
Quantum Energy connected with the EDC Accelerate Hub, where they completed over 20 hours of intensive technical assistance activities, including capital access support, one-on-one mentorship, and resource provider networking. The company received expert guidance from Brendon Keiser, Bill Keating, Bill Bartels, Guy Smith, and Amari Trelles on organizational development, financial planning, and strategic business alignment.
“Quantum Energy Inc. has greatly benefited from the comprehensive support offered by the EDC Accelerate Hub,” shared Dr. Ray Bowman, Director of EDC Accelerate Hub. “With expert guidance from our team, the company received critical assistance in organizational development, financial planning, and strategic business alignment. This expert support has played a key role in positioning Quantum Energy for sustainable growth and successfully scaling its innovative solutions.”
The EDC also referred Quantum Energy to strategic resource partners, including Fathomwerx and HotHouse, which provided essential support and expanded networking opportunities. The company participated in an EDC Accelerate Hub-hosted pitch event, an invaluable experience that helped refine its business model and presentation skills.
Through the Hub, Quantum Energy received an Accelerate California Innovation Grant for $100,000, which supports their MVP launch, beta testing, and product optimization. In a single quarter, the company generated $210,000 in sales, including $100,000 in annual recurring revenue, demonstrating strong market validation. The company is targeting commercial release of its cloud-based TotalView SaaS platform, with projections to achieve break-even with 20 customers generating $2 million in annual recurring revenue.
Quantum Energy has already demonstrated the platform’s transformative value through several high-profile successes. For the largest wind and solar project in the United States, which had been stalled for over two years in permitting, their impact analytics helped secure approval in just six weeks after presentation. The largest solar project in Wisconsin faced unprecedented opposition but was fully permitted after Quantum Energy’s analytics were filed on the legal docket.
Their work on the Vista Sands Solar project was recently featured as a case study by the World Economic Forum’s Responsible Renewables Infrastructure initiative, highlighting how data-driven public health and ecosystem impact assessment helped secure project permitting. The company has also signed an enterprise software license agreement with the largest corporate purchaser of energy in the world and recently launched a partnership with the largest Renewable Energy Credit (REC) marketplace in the U.S.
With labs and operations in Santa Barbara, Quantum Energy is well-positioned to accelerate clean energy adoption, inform smarter policy decisions, and generate meaningful benefits for communities across California and beyond. The company’s innovative approach addresses a $335 million U.S. serviceable market, with plans to expand to Europe where the market more than doubles in size.
