For founder Anna Covarrubias, baking has always been part of her family’s way of expressing love. Raised in a household full of cooks, she was inspired by her mother’s recipes and the joy of sharing food. After starting with small orders for friends and family, she quickly realized there was a growing demand for her pies. Her passion and drive to build something meaningful for her children led her to leap into full-time entrepreneurship.

As her business grew, Anna faced difficulties transitioning from pop-ups and pre-orders to a physical storefront. She needed guidance on business expansion, securing a location, and navigating the logistics of running a brick-and-mortar shop.

With support from the Water, Energy and Technology Center of Frenso State (WET Center) Anna opened The Pie Mamas’ first brick-and-mortar, increasing customer accessibility and expanding her operations. The transition has allowed her to reach a wider audience, including out-of-state customers, and create job opportunities within the community.

Through the Fresno Metro Black Chamber of Commerce (FMBCC) Anna found that connections to business resources and guidance on securing a physical location were the most valuable aspects of the support she received. Consulting with experts and accessing local business networks helped turn her vision into a reality, allowing her to take the next steps in growing her business.

The Pie Mamas is more than just a bakery. To Anna and her team, it represents a labor of love, tradition, and community. What began as a small venture selling pies at farmers’ markets and ArtHop events has blossomed into a cozy storefront in Downtown Fresno. Each pie is made from scratch, featuring intricate designs and locally sourced ingredients that deliver a taste of home to every customer.
